Good Neighbours

by David Dedrick on December 30, 2011

Since Ian and I brought this short film up during Sneaky Dragon, I thought I’d post it here. Unless you are a Canadian of a particular age, it’s possible that you have never seen this film. It was popular with a certain type of a teacher during my elementary schooling and I saw it many times – both in school and at day camps.

Neighbours was written and directed by Norman McLaren using a process called “pixelation”. He also created the soundtrack by scratching and marking the edge of the film. The film won an Oscar in 1952 for Best Short Documentary (!).

Pretty gruesome, eh? Especially when you’re a little kid. The (possibly) kabuki-inspired makeup was terrifying!

Happy New Year! Sneaky Dragon get into the spirit of things by talking about New Year’s past; Scotland is discussed in great detail and great inaccuracy; Dave hacks on yet another Immortal of childhood nostalgia: It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, blah, blah, blah World; Ian has thought wa-a-a-ay too much about “The Lady or the […]

As we said in Episode 3, we’ve got a contest going. The prize? Some Simpsons and Futurama comic books written and autographed by Ian Boothby. To win give us something that CSI Miami’s Horatio Caine might say about the murder of Mrs. Claus as he takes off his sunglasses at the crime scene. Bad puns […]

Ian will be appearing tonight and most Friday nights at Amuse Bouche, a charmingly intimate show featuring stand-up comedy without a mic. It really gives the performers a different venue and allows for a more relaxed act, often with more a conversational approach. It starts at 8PM at the quaintly named Slickety Jim’s Chat’n’Chew, which […]

Here it is! Episode 2 of Sneaky Dragon. This week, Dave seems to be confused and refers to radio and podcasting as a visual medium -not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES!!! (Maybe more, I wasn’t counting.) He was planning on editing it out, but Ian’s concerns over the possible effect to the Space-Time Continuum […]

Hooray! We completed our first podcast episode. It wasn’t as easy as I’d hoped, but we did it. Please excuse some of the roughness in the audio quality. We promise to have it fixed for the next episode (or at least try to have it fixed). In this, one of the nerdiest podcast episodes to […]
