Good Neighbours

Since Ian and I brought this short film up during Sneaky Dragon, I thought I’d post it here. Unless you are a Canadian of a particular age, it’s possible that you have never seen this film. It was popular with a certain type of a teacher during my elementary schooling and I saw it many times – both in school and at day camps.

Neighbours was written and directed by Norman McLaren using a process called “pixelation”. He also created the soundtrack by scratching and marking the edge of the film. The film won an Oscar in 1952 for Best Short Documentary (!).

Pretty gruesome, eh? Especially when you’re a little kid. The (possibly) kabuki-inspired makeup was terrifying!
