Sneaky Dragon Episode 195

Sneaky-Dragon-Episode-195

Hello, Sneakers! Our apologies for the delay this week. The Lower Mainland – the delightfully idiosyncratic name for Vancouver and its environs – had a massive windstorm yesterday that knocked down hundreds of trees and the power to thousands of homes for the better part of yesterday late into the night.

But, lucky you(?), here it is: Episode 195 of Sneaky Dragon! And since it’s nearing the end of summer, Ian and Dave are contractually obligated to discuss our local fair, the PNE and all the delightful things associated with it: junk food, protesters and soon-to-be dead animals. Also on the show: Dave plays a guitar solo; he also wants to make it clear that he REALLY likes country fairs; Ian’s shocking betrayal of his grandfather; Ian and Dave went and saw the Canadian rock band Sloan at the PNE – simultaneously, but not together – Dave has lots to say about them; Ian wishes concerts were shorter and Dave wishes they would get rid of the encore.

(We’re posting this to the sound of chainsaws and neighbours clearing away all the windfall.)

Thanks for listening.

  1. So if you are recording Sneaky Dragon September 12 @ 8, if we show up at noon will we also catch the 8 hour recording session of Totally Tintin?

  2. Where to start with Sloan? I say the beginning. I’m a big fan of the first two albums. But one can’t go wrong, really, that smartass cleverness and solid songwritingruns throughout.

  3. Ooh! Coming to Show 195 a couple of weeks late. I was both elated and dismayed in the second half of the show.

Elated, because, Ian, you mentioned getting “tired” of a concerts after thirty minutes or so. Excellent! I’m not the only one that happens to. I felt so alone … until now. The Opening Acts franchise sounds brilliant.

Dismayed, because in the subsequent discussion about encores, Ian, you didn’t lay claim to the Irrelevants skit from last season about encores. I’m a fan of both Sneaky Dragon and the Irrelevants, and I’m always trying to figure out, based on how you discuss the construction and delivery of comedic ideas on Sneaky Dragon, what skits you may have written for the Irrelevants. I had thought the Encore skit might have been yours. But I take your non-reference to it while responding to Dave as a “No”. Thus my dismay.

Dave, re encores, this skit’s for you.

P.S. Your Sneaky Dragon encore response of “Fuck off” reminds me of seeing Monty Python in Regina in 1973. At the end of the show, after several minutes of applause and shouts for more, we were greeted with a slide projected on the curtain that simply read, “Piss off”. We laughed and said “Oh, those crazy guys!” and went home happy.

P.P.S. You’ve obviously never seen a Leonard Cohen encore. We saw one two years ago where the encore was some forty minutes (following a two hour plus show). A good part of the audience, including us, had left by about the 20 minute mark. It even included a song by his backup singers. WTF? His encores are longer than an opening act.
