In the Land of the Soviets

Totally Tintin

Welcome to Totally Tintin. This week we begin at the beginning and take a look at Hergé’s most unusual book The Adventures of Tintin Reporter for “Le Petit Vingtième ” in the Land of the Soviets. There is no other book quite like it in the canon, but its rambunctious joie de vivre is enough to get past the rough art and the possibly rougher story.

  1. Great start on the new podcast, guys! As someone who tends to read the dialogue and skim over the artwork, I’m looking forward to the comic-book artists view of Tintin. I had never noticed the ‘head in a jar’ in the torture chamber before…

  2. I think the issue may be that the outer layer of anything is destroyed, ripped or tattered. Unfortunately horses do not have that additional protective outer layer.

  3. Just finished listening to this. Broke it up into I think 6 listening sessions. Pretty long. Haven’t read any of these books in at least 30 years, so the memories are hazy. Just put this one and the next 4 on hold at the library. But some are already checked out, so maybe there is some buzz for the podcast…. Anyways I’m looking forward to reading and listening along with you guys on this one.

  4. I hope they keep these books out of prison libraries. Dangerous knowledge. I don’t want mass murderers learning that all they need to do to escape is dismantle stone walls with their bare hands before using discarded diving suits to swim to freedom.

  5. I just heard about this on Facebook! Fun and informative! I don’t recall reading about the influence of “bringing up father” on Herge but I can see it. I would suggest the “cannibal” scene was inspired by reports of actual cannibalism during the famine in the Ukraine. Were you not familiar with Lucky Luke growing up?
