Sneaky Dragon Episode 168

Sneaky-Dragon-Episode-168

G’day, Sneakeroos! This week on Sneaky Dragon you can learn Dave’s mnemonic device for remembering his name; possibly true facts about Smokey the Bear; how Dave blew it; Ian’s guide to inhuman human interactions; Ian and Dave’s feelings about the anti-vaccine movement; a terrible, horrible medical experiment that Dave had never heard of; Ian’s thoughts about Eddie Murphy on SNL’s 40th Anniversary Special; how much Dave and Ian appreciate Stan Freberg and crazy Muppet commercials; Ian’s Columbo watching system; how much Dave likes Emergency! – again; about Goofy’s job as an actor in Disney’s cartoons; how Ian really feels about paying twelve grand to learn to be funny; and, finally, Dave’s two most important skills he can bring to job hunting.

Thanks for listening.

  1. Hi Guys,

Ian, the place you were thinking about is the Bears Produce Market in Keremeos. That’s the place with the big bear peeking over the hill.

  2. “Mad About You” had a couple of strong seasons. It had a fresh and honest approach to marriage relationship comedy. Then the bickering between the characters became so annoying, I starting calling it “Mad At You” (and stopped watching.)

  3. Hi guys,

Sorry to hear about the job, Dave, I was let go from my work in October. On one hand, it was great! Our daughter was born in December, and it’s been wonderful to be home with her and my wife. On the other hand, our daughter was born in December, and I’m getting pretty sick of her and my wife- er, I mean, it is incumbent upon me to support my family. Fortunately, two opportunities have come up, but I’m having trouble choosing between them:

    *Job #1*
Pros: Good pay, good hours, benefits, unionized, literally across the street from my house.
Cons: Alternating morning/afternoon/evening shifts, weekends/holidays, expectation that I will be available to work 24/7, industrial-type setting.

    *Job #2*
Pros: Consistent M-F shift, decent pay, potential to become permanent employee down the road, 15 minute walk from my house, nice environment.
Cons: Term position expires in June, ineligible for benefits b/c of temp status, pay isn’t as good as Job #1.

I’m leaning towards Job #2. The pay isn’t as good, but I like the consistent shift, the environment is far more appealing, and I’m more confident that I can handle the work. Both are just custodial-type deals, but Job #1 has some specialized aspects that may not be a good fit. Another strike against #1 is I applied in November and it took them months to get back to me, and even after they got in touch the process has been dragging; either I’ve had to jump through a lot of hoops or people have been on vacation, so it’s been hurry up and wait.

I guess the question is it responsible for a person with a new baby to go with a temp job that pays less, but has the potential to become more, or should they opt for a better paying permanent position but with a lot of red flags and possible hassles? If you guys are looking for grist for the show, or if my fellow Sneakers have any suggestions, maybe you can help me choose which job to take!

Also, my response to “Why would you like to work here?” was “It’s near my house.” It went over better than I expected it to. Obviously, only an option if you actually live near a potential employer.

  4. Seems like a freedom vs. money thing. I’m not a father but I’d go with #2 so you can plan and spend more time with your child. As the across the street person it feels like you’d never be far enough from work to really relax especially if they can call on you any time. A 15 min walk is good, a half hour every day to yourself to think and relax.
