With David M. This week Ian and Dave are joined by fellow Dragon enthusiast David M. and his dog Ozzy for fun songs and fun talk. This week’s show is coming to us live from the San Diego Comic-Con so “Excelsior!” Also discussed: Dave confuses the porn version; we learn about a magical record store (Music Madhouse Records); Ian asks what are CDs; we learn about the Feast of Stephen; David takes us to a Tsunamit Benefit; there is a sound problem and our fabulous intermission music makes a return; speaking of returns, vaudeville should make a comeback; let’s talk about the Ramones and sniff some glue; Dave loses his head; some San Diego must sees; David talks David Bowie and celebrates peace on earth; Dave’s timely and completely right dragon movie reference; Bing Crosby makes an appearance and then the laughing gnome drops by; time for Tic Tac talk; Dave wants to know about songwriting and creativity; everything is shitty; David has a new sitcom idea about a guy’s wife and his dead wife; David plays a song for his friend for Allan MacInnis; and then a song for Dave; finally, it’s mint, Jim.

  1. Thanks for this week’s podcast of “Sneaky!” the jukebox musical. I especially enjoyed, “My Wife and My Dead Wife.”

I’m not sure who my ghost husband would be — someone who died pretty young (i.e. pretty and young.) Cuz if you’re going to be haunted by a guy, you don’t want to run the risk of being haunted by their grumpy old later-in-life Republican selves. (Yeah, I’m talking to you, Charlton Heston and future spirit of Clint Eastwood!) If Channing Tatum were dead, it might be him (especially if he manifested as his bad boy street dancer character from Step Up.) But he’s still alive (despite how hard Jupiter Ascending tried to kill his career) so I guess I’ll have to go with Tyrone Power as seen in The Mark of Zorro. He died at the age of 44 so he remains forever dashing.

Your sitcom pitch reminds me of Blithe Spirit, Noel Coward’s 1941 stage comedy about a novelist whose dead wife is accidently summoned during a séance. Then she hangs around to try to sabotage his marriage to his second wife. Rex Harrison played the guy in the movie version (1945.) As you mentioned, he was the sea captain ghost in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947). I guess he wanted to see how the other half didn’t live.

  2. Hi guys, great show this week. I had some questions (not for the question show just for now). I enjoyed listening to David’s songs this week. Brought me back a few years. In 1988, me and my friends moved into a townhouse in the west end. Someone gave us a tape. On one side it had a Violent Femmes album, on the other side a live No Fun concert. We listened to that until it broke. Since then, I only have one No Fun song on the Vancouver Complication. Are these No Fun albums you were referring to throughout the show available digitally? If so, which would you recommend as a starting point?

Also David referred to a show he played with Pete Campbell. More than anyone else, I would say Pete was my musical inspiration. Since The Sweaters disbanded, he hasn’t really done much musically that I was aware of, until now. So wondering if David M could provide any details as to any shows or recordings Pete has done lately?

Thanks and thanks for consistently providing such high quality entertainment.

    Ken

    1. Hey Ken…direct from the proverbial horse’s mouth here is the answer to at least one of your questions:
After The Sweaters broke up I did the singer/songwriter thing around Vancouver for a couple years…I had a combination epiphany/rude awakening after one of my solo shows when I realized that the only people who ever came to my shows were friends and family who basically came out of a sense of loyalty and obligation…also as my friend David M once said to me, referring to the availability of entertainment in the digital age “There is too much of everything…”….I heartily concurred and abruptly put my solo career to rest…
In the meantime however I stumbled into my vocation: I now play between 40 and 50 shows a month at long term care facilities as “Sing Along With Pete”….it is more rewarding than I ever imagined playing music could be and I feel so fortunate to be able to do it….you can learn more than you would ever want to know about that endeavour right here:

By some happy accident I have been welcomed into the musical family of the afore- mentioned David M….whenever he plays a show around town he invites me to get up onstage with him and accompany him on a few songs…a poor man’s Paul Leahy if you will…like you I wore out a No Fun cassette or two in my time, so you can imagine what an honour/thrill it is to play with him…we are frequently joined onstage by Mr. Sneaky Dragon himself Dave Dedrick, who smiles indulgently at my attempts at humour and takes in-stride my unintentional at at times intentional mangling of his name…
I have also recently put together a new musical project called Coach StrobCam with a couple of fine musicians I met during my 5 year tenure with the magnificent East Van rock and roll choir known as Clancy’s Angels…we have only played one show but may be playing with David M in just a couple week’s time…check David M’s facebook page for details…
Allan MacInnes did a long form email interview with me that appeared on his excellent blog a few months back…he wanted to know about my history and so I filled him in…that interview can be found here:

Anyway Ken, thanks for the kind words and expressing interest in whatever happened to old Pete Campbell!
      Signed,
      Old Pete Campbell

If you’re on Facebook, there’s a group called “No Fun: The Beatles Of Surrey” with a lot of NO FUN stuff, including all the CD details. It sounds like “NO FUN On Stage” is the tape you had, which was our opening set for Violent Femmes on April 11, 1986 at the Commodore. If it was one of the first cassette copies, it was on a C-90 with a blank second side (to fill with whatever you wanted).
