Sneaky Dragon Episode 276

Hola, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 276 of Sneaky Dragon. This week on the show: Ian and Dave get super-marionationed; it turns out sex can go on for too long; Dave gets too clever; Dave says no math; looking for tiny particles; Ian says no to boxing; Ian justifies the monologue-ing villain; Ian takes us through the Rocky cycle; what makes a good actor; Ian justifies Keanu Reeves; no one needs Good Cop/Bon Cop Deux; let’s go back to 70’s Can-Con cinema; Canadian accents; kim chi; Dave’s Art Talk about brushes; Ian’s teeth talk about teeth; anesthesia; and, finally, a long talk about Logan (spoiler warning from 1 hour and 29 to 1 hour and 59).

  1. I like what Tilda Swinton had to say about Keanu:
“he thing that people need to remember about him is that he’s so much more than an actor. He’s a serious, serious movie star. I mean, if you think of Gary Cooper, for example, who’s so much more than an actor. He’s iconic in that way. He’s so much better than a good actor. There’s so much more to him, so much more than the sum of his parts.” All his former co-stars and directors talk about his intelligence and seriousness, that the dum-dum reputation is misapplied. I think he doesn’t always have a facility for things like accents and other abilities, but I do agree with Ian that he gets out of the way of the story more often than not. We really are conditioned to be wowed by ~*acting!*~

  2. The name of the film is “Bon Cop, Bad Cop.”

I liked “Logan” for the most part, bleak as it was. Regarding then ending: I know Hugh Jackman said he wanted “Logan” to be like “Unforgiven” but I think he forgot how that one actually ended! Still, I don’t think Logan would’ve had the temperament to run a school. At best, he’d’ve found someone else to run it and then headed off to a bar somewhere.

I think owners of copyrighted characters are within their rights to let whomever they want interpret/reimagine them. And people are within their rights to object when the adapters stray too far from what made them fans of their stories in the first place. I was a big fan of the Sookie Stackhouse novels and didn’t enjoy all ways Alan Ball reimagined the world in HBO’s “True Blood” series — although I’m sure he was responsible for all the fine male nudity. But by all accounts the author was happy to let him play around with her characters and she just made it clear to her fans that the TV series was its own thing.
