Sneaky Dragon Episode 290

Ian’s amazed. We’re all amazed we’ve made it this far. It’s episode 290! This week on the show, Ian and Dave talk driving and bad driving; give some old movie spoilers; rank best Snoopy characters; discuss Peanuts-related songs; ineptly guess at copyright law; watch Dave’s YouTube debut; do a bit of Beatles; go to the death disco; live through a different time; realize podcasts are bad for passwords; Ian re-experiences puberty; Dave gets jerk karma; they go all Neil Sedaka trivia (that’s different!); Ian goes commercial; he also takes a bite out of crime; Ian and Dave discuss the new Wonder Woman film in some detail (WARNING: SPOILERS from 55:00 to 1:35:00); and, finally, they get all serious and deep discussing social anxiety, their coping strategies and developing resilience.

Thanks for listening.

As always, our contests and demands for your participation continue:

  1. Have some dinner with Ian and Dave, and, if you want, watch Sneaky Dragon being recorded. All you have to do is send us a little message that says, “I’d like to eat with you!” and Ian and Dave will treat you to an after-show meal at their favourite White Spot.
  2. Send us your story. That’s right. Just your story. If you need a prompt, Ian suggested “your secret origin” and Dave suggested “how how you found Sneaky Dragon” Please record a two to three minute story and send it to us via email (sneakyd@sneakydragon.com) or our Facebook page. Or Skype Sneaky Dragon and leave a message on our voicemail. David will add a playlist for your story as well.

Department of Corections:
Dave was wrong with his Neil Sedaka trivia: Sedaka recorded two albums with the not-quite-yet 10CC – Solitaire and The Tra-La Days Are Over. Neither album contained the hit “Bad Blood” (featuring Elton John on backing vocals), which David conflated with the Elton John song “The Bitch Is Back”.

Please accept our apologies. David has been made to listen to “Calendar Girl” one hundred times.

If you have never heard “Bad Blood”, it’s pretty good:

Here is that execrable Snoopy song:

There were three more Snoopy Vs. the Red Baron songs, but I will only post one more because none of them are very good:

I watched this carefully. I can’t see what Ian is talking about…

And here is Dave’s interview:

  1. Loved your advice and discussion about anxiety. It helps to feel like you’re not alone in the struggle.

  2. Okay, I admit I like to look stuff up while I listen to Sneaky Dragon, but at least I’m not a SECRET fact-checker.

I’d heard that Weird Al gets permission from artists before he uses their music for his parodies but I wanted to know if pays to use it. He does. He licenses both the songs and their music videos and thus stays out of court.

And also I got curious about Snoopy Vs. The Red Baron because Peanuts has always been this trademark juggernaut. Apparently Schultz and United Features Syndicate won a lawsuit against The Royal Guardsmen and was awarded the revenue from the recording. But then Schultz let them record other Snoopy songs after that.

  3. I’m surprised the Schultz estate is okay with this. I don’t think Snoopy would take part in an assassination. He’s a beagle, not a Seal.

About the woman concerned about her daughter’s social anxiety. If it’s bad enough to prevent her from parenting her child well or from holding down a job or even just getting out of the house, then maybe the mom should encourage her to seek some counselling or a support group. In the meantime, if they live close to each other, maybe the mom could offer to provide some childcare while the daughter gets involved in some regular structured activity where she can do something with other people without the pressure of having to talk a lot: a zumba class, yoga, tai chi, aquafit, community choir, art class, knitting group. She could volunteer for a cause she’s into like an animal shelter or thrift store.

  4. There was a Schulz documentary about 15 years ago where the Snoopy song was mentioned – he had no idea about the song until a friend told him it was on the radio. I recently bought the ‘Snoopy and his Friends’ on vinyl at a flea market, but I don’t think I’ve listened to it. It was more just to have the thing! Schulz drew the cover art for it.
Thank you for talking about anxiety and tips for dealing with it. My wife has had GAD for about 8 years now and it can make doing seemingly simple things very hard. My heart goes out to anyone dealing with it. It’s always great to hear your thoughts and experiences.

Thank you, David and Ian, for taking the time to discuss the social anxiety issue. Very thoughtfully presented and there were useful ideas offered that I will gently pass along to my loved one who has this in her life.

About that list of Beatle songs in Episode 289, it is so annoying to hear! A list like that is so extremely subjective! Right??? I mean everyone’s take would be different. No two people on the planet would likely agree on order of worst to best! You handled it very well though. As far as I could tell, you didn’t throw things… 🙂

  6. Thank you for taking some time to talk about your personal struggles with various aspects of anxiety and self-esteem. It’s very comforting to hear people talk about it, especially people I esteem as much as you two. One of the worst parts of anxiety/depression for me is how it tries to silence me and make me believe I should be invisible, so any attempt to shed light on it and let people know they’re not alone is so appreciated.

    Keep being awesome, you two!
