Sneaky Dragon Episode 308

Hola, Sneakers!

Welcome to another episode of the popular dating website Sneaky Dragon! This week on the show, Ian and Dave get off to a rough start; criticize some unwarranted criticism; invite the siren apocalypse; have a cat update; experience pet feelings; ask some universal questions; find out who really killed JFK; get paranoid; turn into crabby not old people; are still worried about Jim Carrey; figure it’s just a coincidence; see the past and sort of freak out; watch the forgotten Timothy Dalton James Bond film; are offensive to devils; get bad candy; discover a potential Halloween bonanza; can’t watch long shows; go off The Inhumans; read Star Trek letters of condolences; go on a fruit rant; and, finally, have a little Chick Talk™.

Thanks for listening!

Let’s celebrate the remarkable apple!

  1. David, pretty much all the fruit you poo-poo’d on are popular/common in other continents, so this is a clear-cut case of “you love what you grow up with.”

Also the best apple is Ambrosia.

    1. Oh I just heard the end of the episode. Yes I’m still here, easily summoned when you start insulting all the fruits my Asian friends grew up with

      1. SORRY one more thing to add about the fruit thing (I with there were an edit button): you’re not getting the best version of any of those fruits over here. You gotta go to southeast asia to get GOOD jackfruit, guava, starfruit, etc. Jackfruit can be amazing but I’ve never had a good one in North America.

          1. I’ve been wanting to try jackfruit pulled pork ever since I started my mostly-vegetarian diet. I can see how it would work since it can definitely get that shredded consistency.

      1. Somehow, crossing two of my least favourite apples (red delicious and golden delicious) results in a wonderfully sweet and crispy delight.

  2. The Jim Carrey thing was fascinating to hear about, then listen to on Norm’s show, I kept thinking he was angling for laughs, but then the Jesus bit. Norm seemed to take all of it in stride, and I still think Carrey is quick and often funny, but Ian’s analysis resonates. It put me in mind of a corollary statement by Paul McCartney. Living in New York, Paul likes (or used to like) to ride public transportation when he can in order to be with people directly, without the filter of handlers, minders, or press. He said in one interview he loves to chat with them, but is reluctant to pose for selfies or sign autographs. He likes to feel he’s himself, but if cameras are involved, he feels he has to become a particular famous Paul: the one they imagine him to be. Paraphrasing, “They don’t want a picture with *me*, they want photographs of, y’know, HIM.” He feels pressured to put on HIM’s persona and it no longer feels real.

    Nerd stuff:
Riker plays the trombone, and not terribly.
Jack fruit is becoming popular down here as a meat substitute. It makes a pretty decent chili, and seems well-suited to savory preparations.

    Fave apples:
    Everyday – Gala
    Occasional – Envy or Honeycrisp
    Seasonal – Snapdragon

    1. Not just any fruits but nearly all southeast asian ones! Between this and Child Ian dressing as a Chinese person, I’m going to have to call some people on this podcast. I don’t know who, but I’m sure there’s some group out there.

  3. Well, we can’t MAKE Dave watch (let alone, like) Star Trek: Discovery. That said, he might enjoy this week’s installment (Ep 7: “Magic To Make The Sanest Man Go Mad.” What’s the magic, you ask? Hint: it’s also The Fifth Element!) This one felt more like a typical Star Trek TV series episode than the previous ones. Minor Spoilers: I enjoyed the loopy stuff, the flirty stuff, the intergalactic environmental regulations regarding endangered space species, Rainn Wilson as Mudd…and best of all…I didn’t have to read any subtitles this week. The only thing that must go are those DISCO shirts the characters wear while working out. Yeah, yeah. Disco is short for Discovery and they’ll sell lots of T shirts on official Star Trek merch websites, but as a child of the 70s I still feel that disco sucks.

Also, Sparks! is an awesome book!

  4. I heard a planet money episode a while back about apples… since then I’ve been eating the sweet tango apple that they mentioned.
