Sneaky Dragon Episode 312

Hola, Sneakers! Welcome to the actual, real, true, and absolutely factual sixth anniversary show of Sneaky Dragon! Ian and Dave celebrate by…

…not really doing anything different. Just talking.

This week they talk about first grade learnin’; silent reading; schools on film; outdoor locker theft; the wonders of the Minidisc; our animal listenership; no water on Mars; the copycat American Thanksgiving; monochromatic Woody Allen films; another look at I Love You, Daddy; portraying sympathetic rich jerks; Dave’s comeuppance; cute racists; poor musical parenting; a Thunder Bay knock; Canada’s failed film industry; fond Canadian memories; friendly giants; local TV kids shows; obscure animated kids shows; cowboy magic; a Hinterland Who’s Who theme song controversy; and, finally, jazz cats.

Thanks for listening.

The wonders of the Minidisc:

Despite Ian’s outrage, here is two pipes and a bassoon on the Friendly Giant:

That obscure French cartoon Dave watched as a burnt-out student:

  1. If it makes Dave feel any better for momentarily forgetting Get Back, I’m fairly sure that Steve Miller song refers to Pheonix, Arizona, not Tucson. I guess you couldn’t hear me yelling from over here.

  2. Friendly Fact Check:
According to Imdb.com, it ran on the CBC from 1958-1985. The theme song is an English folk song called “Early One Morning.” I used to play it on the recorder when I was a kid, inspired by hearing it on the show:

Early one morning, just as the sun was rising
I heard a maid sing in the valley below
“Oh don’t deceive me, Oh never leave me,
How could you use, a poor maiden so?”

They never sang the lyrics on the show. Probably a good thing as the maiden goes to fear her lover will dump her after “kissing and courting and gently sporting.”

I too was bored when the cat and raccoon puppets played music. And I could tell they weren’t really playing those instruments! I was more into the stories that Friendly read. I didn’t care if the books in Rusty’s book bag couldn’t have possibly been inside it all along.
