Sneaky Dragon Episode 327

Ciao, Sneakers! Welcome to Sneaky Dragon Episode 327! We just keep on truckin’.

This week on the show: Ian and Dave launch a book; read Harry Potter; self-sabotage; get stuck on traffic; visit the Electric Playground; get depressed; need affirmation; cross the border; read New Yorker cartoons; try to figure out Playboy; find a treasure trove of obscurity; make up lists of Top 5’s; watch the most terrible TV comercial ever made; and, finally, and, finally, have some exciting news – maybe game-changing news – about the podcast.

Thanks for listening.

And thanks to everyone who has helped celebrate the release of Sparks. We really appreciate it.

Here is Ian’s appearance on Electric Playground:

  1. I haven’t finished listening to this yet but: you said to draw it in the Sparks style! The Sparks style isn’t my natural style — it’s a completely new one I came up with for the book. I haven’t figured out how to draw a lot of things in it yet. I was starting to draw a more realistic dog, but then I had to re-wire my brain to think of a Golden Retriever in a cartoony western style.

  2. In honour of Sparks!, I’d like Dave to list his TOP 5 CAT SONGS — songs that mention a cat or a member of the cat family and say what is significant to him about them.

Example: one of my favourite doo-wop songs is “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” because you can have fun singing the “wimoweh” part or the “weeheeheehee” part when the chorus comes around. (Also because Disney had to pay up for using it in “The Lion King” because it turns out The Tokens’ version was based on a song by Peter Seeger’s folk group The Weavers which was based on tune by a South African songwriter, Solomon Linda whose estate had the underlying copyright.)

  3. Hello! I was surprized to hear that the performance at Kidsbook was thrown together so quickly. I thought you had it rehearsed. Giving the drawings to the people in the crowd was a good touch.

And yes, Kidsbooks is amazing. That was my second time there; the first was a few weeks ago, and one of the people working there was able to give me multiple recommendations on good books for a three-year-old.

Speaking of good books… good work on Sparks, eh!

Also, song lists! Here’s an easy one: songs about driving. “Fast Car” is the best, of course. I have a soft spot for “Crash” by the Primitives. I’m sure there are plenty more, but that’s all I have off the top of my head.

    Cheers!

  4. This may overlap with Louise’s Top 5 list a little, but top 5 songs you would put in a soundtrack for a Sparks movie.

  5. I like the idea of top 5 songs that start great but quickly lose it. My list would have to start with ‘Layla’ by Derek and the Dominos, and ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart’ by Yes. Both have incredible opening riffs tacked onto pretty dull songs.

  6. Hi Guys,

Dave, I was one of those people posting on Facebook about you not being at the book signing. I thought I was being super hilarious joking about it and never even thought about how you might be feeling about it. So I’m sorry for being insensitive. Just another one of those reminders to me that I should think about it before I go posting stuff on the internet.

My favourite song about Hollywood: This Ain’t Hollywood – The Forgotten Rebels
Favourite song about the country: Place in the Country – Adam Ant
