A good, positive reading to the film:

A valiant attempt to raise this film’s reputation:

  1. Great videos! Except the third one. (Couldn’t get more than 5 minutes in to that. When she whined about wearing a baseball cap to look younger – look at her! – I stopped.)

The Pleasantville one is spot on to why I like it so much, it’s a dense 2 hour retelling of America’s racial and sexual revolutions. (Though it is a little strange to have an analogy of racial relations starring all white people. Seriously, when everyone starts getting ‘filled in’, is there even one black person? It really is 50s suburban America.) I saw it mainly as being against advertising. Advertising how you want to be versus who or what you really are. Advertising in the early-mid 20th century is responsible for so many weird things that people today think is how it’s always been. “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” was from ads. Before that slogan, they couldn’t give them away. “Three square meals a day” comes from ads for frozen dinners (because they’re square). etc, etc. All things that contribute to that pristine sitcom world that is a result of ‘how you should be’.

And Battle Royale? I just love how things turn on a dime. It’s nuts. The girls in the lighthouse banding together, but then it all falls apart due to normal schoolyard bickering. The start in the briefing room (with the hilariously upbeat Japanese info video) is pretty tense because it goes south very quickly. It has a sort of ‘anything can happen’ vibe. And I love that the school stuff is still intact. The teacher has his favourite student. There are innapropriate crushes all over the place that turn very dark when they’re not exactly appreciated, especially due to the circumstances. It’s weird and quirky and violent, and unique for its time. (Now it’s been done to death of course.)

Anyway, I mostly wanted to say how, in the same episode you talked about my list, Beans Baxter was also mentioned!! I was talking to my brother back in Aus about that just a few weeks ago, because we like to get nostalgic. (Or I do, living in Canada with no childhood touchstones around. I rely on my brother to remind me of things.) It was a favourite growing up. Yep, Beans made it all the way to the ABC in Australia. Probably shown before Degrassi. I don’t remember too much about it, just that it had a funky semi-animated opening sequence, yes?

Cheers guys! Thanks for going through my list! Seriously, if you can find it, check out Interstate 60.

Also, I’ve only just watched this in the last month or two so it didn’t really make the list – things need time to gestate! – but have either of you seen Turbo Kid? Amazing.
