Sneaky Dragon Episode 53

Oh dear friends of dragons who are sneaky, welcome to the first show of a brand-new year of Sneaky Dragon! There are some changes afoot as we start the new year: Ian has been fired and David has been replaced by a goat.

No, but seriously, Ian and Dave are fired. But they’ve been replaced by whole new Ian and Dave, who will be bringing a fresh new attitude to Sneaky Dragon! This week they talk about comics: can they ever be anything other than something Joss Whedon makes good movies from or in which handsome actors play unconvincing nerds? Is digital downloading a whole new ghetto? What they’re saying is: End comics apartheid! Also discussed: how are movies, books, plays and comics different from each other; why is On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (according to Dave) the best Bond film; what Dave does to save money; where Ian infected thousands of people; and for what reason Dave is not invited to funerals.

If you live in the Vancouver area, you can come see the trivially-challenged Ian and Dave in a hockey trivia challenge. This is a fund-raiser for Canucks Place Children’s Hospice, featuring the hockey film Goon and lots of local comics and celebrity guests. You can get tickets here and read more about it here.

Which James Bond film do you think is the best, dear listener? Ian and Dave would like to know!

I love the Connery Bond movies; however, my favorite James Bond has to be Casino Royal. So, Dave faults it for him playing poke her, but I thought they all poke her in them. I think Lazenby is very underrated as a Bond actor.

  2. Sorry Dave, but here are 11 reasons why I don’t like On Her Majesty’s Secret Service and think it’s a bad movie.

    1. George Lazenby really doesn’t work as James Bond.
    2. The opening sequence… A woman decides to kill herself in the least effective way possible, by walking slowly into the ocean. Bond is attacked on the beach which leads to a fight with grown men splashing around in the waves. Not cool.
    3. “This never happened to the other fella” is campy but it isn’t earned and doesn’t work.
    4. Bond gets into an argument with M and tries to resign.
    5. James Bond wears a kilt. Not cool.
    6. James Bond doesn’t really flirt with any of Blofeld’s twelve Angels of Death. A few girls seem to flirt with him, but James Bond does not seem charming at all. I attribute this failure to George Lazenby.
    7. Blofeld traps Bond in a room and Bond escapes by jumping out an open window. So Blofeld tied up Bond in a room with an exit? He had to risk his life to get to it but the room had an exit.
    8. The skiing scenes, the avalanche scene, and the bobsleigh scene are very boring, not as boring as the underwater scenes in Thunderball, but close.
    9. You end up with Bond and Blofeld fighting in a bobsled tube. Blofeld is hit in the head with a tree branch and Bond thinks he’s dead. This is the same man who stole nuclear weapons in Thunderball. This is the same man who in You Only Live Twice stole US and Soviet spaceships and came so close to starting world war 3 that the US had already sent bombers into an attack against Russia. James Bond thinks this man is dead half a mile up hill from him, so he leaves? Blofeld turns out to be alive and kills Bond’s wife. That’s what you get for not checking to see if the guy is dead.
    10. James Bond gets married.
    11. It has a tragic 70s downer ending. Not how a James Bond movie should end.

    Some things I like
    1. I like Blofelds plan with the Angels of Death.
    2. The music is really good. Maybe my favourite soundtrack of the series.
    3. I like the fighting scenes. Really different from any other Bond movie.
