Sneaky Dragon Episode 79

Sneaky-Dragon-Episode-79

With Robert Dayton. Welcome back, Dragoneers! This week Ian and David are joined by cartoonist/actor/musician Robert Dayton and meet their match with someone who is as big a chatterbox as they are. Robert reveals the mysterious Scott Baio mural in the ladies washroom at the local porn theatre; they talk about the disgusting Kirk Cameron and his banana; which naturally leads to movies about piles of clothes that are LEFT BEHIND!; which naturally leads to Bible talk: Revelation, apocalyptic and prophetic writings, the Apocrypha and the Gnostic Gospels all get a look in before David gets bored; Robert is moved to ask, “What is this show about anyway?” (Good question, Robert, good question); Ian and Robert discuss their dream Kiss tribute bands; Robert maintains that Vancouver is ripping off Toronto; and he also avers that CDs are junk (David disagrees).

It’s nearly impossible to list everything that Robert has done/is doing, but here are some links:

For his music, you can check out long-time Vancouver institution, the concept band/art project, boogie/glam/psych wet fantasy/nightmare dream July Fourth Toilet here on Bandcamp. There is also Canned Hamm, the sexy cabaret duo with Robert and Stephen Hamm. You can check out the website here (although the content is a bit skimpy) and they are also on Bandcamp. Robert is also a member of Wet Dirt (this will take you to a session they did for CBC radio) and New Horizonzzz. One of the reasons Robert was visiting Vancouver was for the record release party for Points Gray, an acid-folk project recorded with Dan Bejar (Destroyer, The New Pornographers) and Julian Lawrence (fellow July Fourth Toilet-er). Robert describes it in the video for the original IndieGoGo fundraising campaign.

You’ll have to search around for some of Robert’s work as a cartoonist, most notably his journal zine Bunyon. He posted a couple of pages on his blog and you can click here to see his kooky stuff. There is also some stuff posted on a dusty shelf called MySpace. He also edited The Drippy Gazette with Julian Lawrwence and you can find the archives here.

We couldn’t get into everything Robert is doing, but he mentioned his character, the Canadian Romantic, whom you can watch on his YouTube channel. Finally, Robert acted in a really good film written and directed by The New Pornographers’ Blaine Thurier called Male Fantasy, which also featured former guest Shane Nelken. Sneaky Dragon recommends you check it out.

Thanks for listening!
