Sneaky Dragon Listening Party – Ep. 70

Hello, partygoers!

Well, this is it. The sad moment we knew would come eventually – the final episode of the Listening Party.

But now ain’t the time for your tears – to paraphrase Bob Dylan – we’ve got a show to do! This bi-week, Mary and David read your celebratory – we hope – comments and play some fun Top 5 playlists!

As we pack up the Listening Party rumpus room and put that old beanbag chair back into storage, we’d like to thank everyone who spent time with us here. We hope you know how much we love and appreciate you all!

As always, thanks for listening.

David, back on the episode 69 page where I wrote, ” I hope you continue to carry a bit of Listening Party over to Sneaky Dragon with Ian, your musical catalog of knowledge is just beginning.” To clarify, I was comparing what you’ve shared with us on Listening Party to the entire music catalog in that noggin of yours. I know you could share the knowledge you have on music for years, Listening Party was just the beginning. I hope and pray you bring more of your musical knowhow into the Sneaky Dragon flagship show or another podcast, I really am humbled by what you know about popular music. You present it well and it keeps me enthralled.

  1. So many great songs in this final episode. Thanks for Mary’s Top 5 Phineas and Ferb Song list. That’s one of my favourite animated series too. If any Sneaky listeners enjoyed those quick cuts, they might want to check out the latest adventure, “Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe” on Disney+. It’s got a bunch of fun songs too but they’re a little longer as they had more time to play with in the movie format.

Speaking of being played, I had a hard time wrapping my head around the revelation that “Ladies In Love” was from a porn film. I wondered if Dave was confusing that film with the 1941 comedy “The Devil AND Miss Jones.” So I looked up the “The Devil IN Miss Jones” soundtrack on YouTube and sure enough, it has a surprisingly classy score for a movie about scoring! The melody of the opening track “In The Beginning” reminded me a bit of the main theme from Jane Campion’s film “The Piano.” I looked that up and learned the tune came from a traditional Scottish song called “Gloomy Winter’s Noo Awa” which was in turn based on an old melody, “Lord Balgonie’s Favourite.” I wonder if Alden Shuman ever heard it. It’s fun to imagine that the same tune inspired the theme songs for both movies.

    1. Ha! You know I’m obsessed with destroying the myth of “boom-chicka-wow” music being used in adult movies! I know it’s just comedy shorthand, but as a music fan I want to defend some of the music used in those films. It’s not all terrible!

While researching this episode, I didn’t turn up much about Alden Shuman – he wrote some pop songs in the ’50s with his brother Earl, which have appeared in a few movies and TV shows through the years, background music for some National Geographic specials, and one film score – the disreputable The Devil in Miss Jones. I wonder if his participation in this less than savoury movie affected his ability to get other jobs. It’s too bad because it really is a good score. It almost makes me want to watch the movie, but…you know…

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Dave and Mary!

Sneaky Dragon Listening Party was a fabulous journey. I’m already looking forward to scurrying back to episode 1 to relive the entire experience from the start.

The Free Design track was the PERFECT closer for the whole series. Their combination of classic pop sensibility, close harmonies, message of love and friendship, slow build, guitar wig-outery and just the right amount of goofy weirdness captured a great deal of the spirit of the podcast.

My Name is Jack was a particular joy in this episode. This was one of my very favourite songs as a wee boy and I hadn’t heard it in years, so it gave me quite the Proustian rush. Fantastic song.

Phineas and Ferb hadn’t crossed my radar until Mary mentioned the show a while back. I’m glad you included that playlist and plan to check out more.

What else is there to say? Thank you (again) for all the wonderful music, the great stories, the many entertaining digressions, and your warm and witty companionship these past few years. You both deserve an award, never mind a well-earned break – though I do hope you’ll bring the old victrola out for another spin or two, whenever the mood takes you.

Until then – oh, mylanta – it’s been a blast!

    1. Thanks, Chris! That means a lot! (I would have responded sooner, but I was taking a well-earned break as per your recommendation.)

So glad you enjoyed The Free Design. It came up in my shuffle and I was, like, “THAT is the show closer!” As you say, it pretty much sums up everything that was great and fun about the Listening Party. And I 100% stand behind the spirit of the song. Thank you, friends, for all your support and love you all – and I really mean that!

Finding a podcast that is worthy of taking the place of Listening Party isn’t easy! You’re a difficult act to follow.
