Sneaky Dragon Episode 169

Sneaky-Dragon-Episode-169

Halloooooo, Sneakers! Let’s start the week with a spectacular publicity fail; in opposite news, Compleatly Beatles is mentioned in the NME and David is well chuffed; it turns out hilarious corporal punishment is okay; maybe one day we’ll all understand the hard realities of parking lots; burn your credit cards; some simple advice for public speaking; don’t get into a van with strangers – unless you’re Dave; Ian seems to be contemplating a career change and has some strong metaphors for Sneaky Dragon; bears are hard to read; the Oscars suck; the Oscars are great; and Dave is an Oscar phony; and, finally, some good, safe workplace practices.

Thanks for listening.

  1. Here in British Columbia, Tokyo-drifting-style street racing will certainly breach your ICBC car insurance contract and void your coverage. How do I know this? I Googled it for you, Dave. Here is the relevant statute:

Section 55(3) of the Insurance (Vehicle) Regulation sets out the ways in which the contract can be breached and applies to Part 7 coverage as it does to other coverages under the Insurance (Vehicle) Act and the Insurance (Vehicle) Regulation:

An insured shall not operate a vehicle for which coverage is provided under section 49 or 49.3 (1) (a) and (c), Part 6 or 7, or Division 2 of Part 10
    (a) if the insured is not authorized and qualified by law to operate the vehicle [i.e. driving without a licence],
    (b) for an illicit or prohibited trade or transportation,
    (c) to escape or avoid arrest or other similar police action, or
    (d) in a race or speed test.

Regarding The Imitation Game and other “based-on-a-true-story” films like this year’s American Sniper, Big Eyes, The Theory of Everything…this is a genre where the filmmakers want to have their “reality” cake and eat it too. They claim they shouldn’t have to stick to the facts because they are creating “art” but at the same time, they exploit the idea that “it really happened…sort of” to draw in audiences. They invent scenes to make the narrative more dramatic, exaggerate conflict between characters to create heroes and villains, rearrange the timeline to make things seem more cause and effect… So I’ll go see the film, enjoy it if its well-made, then try to find out what was fact and what was fiction. It does bother me when a “inspired by true events” drifts so far from reality that it becomes emotionally manipulative or propagandistic.

Here’s a website that examines what’s real and what’s reel in movies based on true stories: http://www.historyvshollywood.com

  2. Noah your comment is correct –
But I think Ian and Dave were just having some ‘South Park’ like fun with the messenger.
I think it’s only made the store more interesting….
But then again, I’m always up for mocking the afflicted

  3. I was referring to the comment mentioned in the podcast, not the recently renamed Jerkstore section of the website. I actually like the renaming.

  4. So much of my life is lived by the wisdom of George Costanza. I wanted to name our dog Jerkstore, but my wife said no. So I just call him that…

  5. On the bright side of things, since the westender didn’t list the best podcasts this year that means the ones from last year still continue their reign. So we’re still tied for number three!

    1. You know it may not be a lack of interest that led to there being no votes on this poll. I did log into their poll on my phone to let them know the best podcast in the city, but their site was not very user friendly on a mobile device. And you had to answer so many questions. I ended up just getting frustrated with the whole process and not bothering.

  6. It happens. I don’t know how to do that but Dave does and will. He’s just busy with his new job right now. I think he’s a bodyguard for some famous singer. Not sure really. Will ask him next podcast.
