Sneaky Dragon Episode 196

Sneaky-Dragon-Episode-196

Hello, Sneakers! This week on Sneaky Dragon we….start with the plugs! Then, as it’s still the end of summer, we are contractually obligated to talk about the PNE – Dave’s daughter Eve is competing in a riding competition there and both Ian and Dave attended a Beatles memorabilia exhibit. What did they think of it? Also this week: Dave is an unavid collector, but if they could, what five pages of art would Ian and Dave own; Dave’s good ol’Griffiths Observatory story; Dave says, “It’s only space”; even more controversially, he says, “Too much Snoopy”; let’s troll the comics page (in the older sense of the word): Hagar the Horrible, The Wizard of Id, Crock and Dilbert get their just desserts; it turns out coffee mugs are expensive; Ian wants a Hannibal spin off; it’s time for some Dirty Deck Talk; Ian makes excuses; let’s shame shaming; and, finally, a classic Dave saying.

We can finally reveal that Ian and Dave will be recording their 200th episode at Skinny Fat Jack’s (3475 Main Street, in the back room of Slickety Jim’s – ) on September 12th – doors at 8:00; show at 9:00. Prepare for the usual hijinks!

Also, Ian and Dave will be appearing on What’s So Funny on Vancouver’s local co-operative radio station Co-Op Radio 100.5 on Sunday, September 6th from 11:00 PM to 12:00 AM – which sounds like a long time, but is only an hour. We’ll discuss the 200th anniversary show and probably talk a lot of nonsense.

Thanks for listening.

  1. Hey inhabitants of Dragons Den II. Great stuff guys, as always. Here are a couple of tidbits re your discussion about The Beatles guitar and amp gear circa The Cavern in the PNE exhibit.

Short answer. Yes, Vox amps and Gretsch/Rickenbacker guitars were in use when they played at the Cavern – at least in the latter days.

    Longer pedantic response

    Exhibit 1

GREAT documentary about Vox amps here. https://youtu.be/oQud4emaSek

Of particular interest to your discussion re the Cavernous Fab Four – check out starting at 9:55 for how Epstein hooked The Beatles up with Vox. The point being Epstein hooked them up before The Beatles broke out big time.

    Exhibit 2

The one piece of footage of The Beatles performing in the Cavern in August 1962.

The amps are a bit difficult to make out, but I’m sure those are Vox. The name plate is blurred, but appears in the right place for the Vox name (upper left) and the material over the speakers has that distinctive diamond pattern the Vox amps had.

And they are in the sweatered stage attire, which means Epstein was definitely managing them at this point and would tie in with him approaching Vox to give The Beatles amps to use.

Also George is playing a Gretsch at this point and John is playing a Rickenbacker.

Obviously though, they wouldn’t have been using the Vox at the Cavern before Epstein became involved (see above documentary). The guitars used is a bit fuzzier. I thought George had a Grestch quite early on, but I’m not sure.

So the appropriate answer whether they were using the equpment at the Cavern would be, “It depends.”.

  2. I read that the Kentucky county clerk who denied marriage licenses to gay couples is an elected official at a salary of $80,000, not a private citizen. I’m not surprised people are attacking her personally when it’s a personal belief that’s motivating her to challenge the current same-sex marriage laws of the US. As comic writers and artists, do you think an unflattering caricature as part of a political cartoon constitutes public shaming or valid social commentary?

    1. It depends, if you’re making fun of someone being overweight or plain looking when that has nothing to do with their negative actions then you’re just taking cheap shots. Mentioning in this case that she’s been married three times is on point when she’s talking about the institution being sacred. Saying she’s white trash as many people have, is just being a snob.
