Sneaky Dragon Episode 29

With Patrick Sauriol. This week on Sneaky Dragon, Ian and Dave are joined by Patrick Sauriol, writer and pioneering Internet nerd. Patrick created one of the first insider movie fan sites so talk naturally veered towards movie-related topics. Patrick gave Ian and Dave a quick history of his website, Corona Coming Attractions, and talked about some of the great things that have happened to him as a result of it. He also told Ian and Dave why so many movies suck the big one. And on that topic, the discussion turned to Alien 3 (one of the biggest disappointments in moviedom and maybe one of the first films to suffer a backlash for what wasn’t on screen). Ian has big dreams for grassroots film-making arising out of the YouTube generation (Dave seemed less sure) and he and Patrick talked about the Blair Witch phenomenon. As usual, Star Wars came up and this time George Lucas got dissed…for Star Wars! The show ended with some controversy: Is Alien Vs. Predator canon? A nation holds its breath.

  1. CARS- Yes! Someone else noticed the door handles and sidewalks! I always assumed that CARS was set in the world of Stephen King’s MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE after the Green Goblin truck finally exterminated Emilio Estevez…

ALIEN 3- I remember hearing about the wooden planet! The final film was terrible- ruined everything good about aliens. Even back in the day, I was all “this can’t happen- the Alien Queen couldn’t lay an egg- she had her ovipositor ripped off! And killing off Ripley :facepalms: Hicks, Newt and Ripley with no weapons on the wooden planet would have been ace!

I *loved* THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT. Still one of the scariest films I’ve ever seen, because it leaves almost everything up to the audience, and the ending refers to something that was talked about in the first 20 minutes 🙂

    1. Yes, as I’ve said before, and will undoubtedly say again, Alien 3 was really killed (for me) by all the pre-production publicity, which presented all kinds of alternatives that all seemed so much better than the film that was finally released.

Gavin, have you seen the trailer for CARS II? It mentions a Car Pope!!! WTF??? Check out our newest links post for the trailer and my comments on that. (The sidewalks are for toddler cars.)

Once again, Blair Witch Project didn’t work for me because a)I saw a review of it by Roger Ebert, which let my imagination run wild and b)the film was actually very disappointing. I wasn’t scared at all during that film (and I scare very easily – witness my fingernail biting while watching The Ring). There were creepy elements and, yes, I like how they incorporated some of the stories at the beginning of the film into the ending, but, to take the ending as an example, I actually was relieved by how quickly the camera zoomed through the house – never allowing the tension to build – until the sudden ending. I don’t think the film was a failure, but it needed more creepiness for me and actually glimpsing that damn witch with her hairy arms (as described near the beginning) would have given me something to fret over. I need a movie that builds tension with sound, camera work and music like Bava’s A Drop of Water or The Exorcist. Blair Witch was a bit clunky in that regard.
