Question of the Week: What movie looked bad in the trailer, but turned out to be good? And, conversely, what movie looked good in the trailer, but turned out to be bad?

There is only one trailer that immediately came to mind for this week’s question, “Magnolia”. Having been completely enthralled with Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Boogie Nights”, “Magnolia” was his next film in line. When the trailer for “Magnolia” was released in 1999, I was completely sold…it was like a work of art to me. I watched the trailer over and over again, the fast cuts, the characters introducing themselves and the music…the Aimee Mann music that sets the pace of the trailer. Then I rushed to the theater to see Magnolia and I remember thinking it was okay but nothing at all like “Boogie Nights” and certainly didn’t make me feel the way the trailer did. The best thing the trailer did was inspire me to look into the music of Aimee Mann, particularly the song “Momentum” which is the song in the trailer…so I guess it sold me on that.

The other trailer that comes to mind, which was classically shown as “trailers” used to be shown AFTER the feature film, was “Back to the Future III.” Since BTTF II & III were filmed simultaneously, Zemeckis had footage at the end of BTTF II to promote BTTF III. I never saw this coming and as much as I love western films AND time travel, I was on my feet when they showed it. The Silvestri western themed flavor to the BTTF theme music, Hill Valley in the old west, Indians, locomotives and the image of the DeLorean being pulled by horses still makes me giddy. I guess I just love the large west imagery and the juxtaposition of the characters trapped in the old west, I still pull this trailer up and watch it for sheer enjoyment now and then.

Thanks for reading my answer from the past week, and you’re right Ian, OZ would be great as a series that could take it’s time being told as it was in Baum’s books. So many great characters too, Jack Pumpkinhead, Tic Tok, The Wooden Sawhorse, The Shaggy Man, The Patchwork Girl, The Flying Gump and of course…The Educated Woggle Bug!! When you guys were discussing witches in OZ, remember there were other witches too besides the North, South, East and West variety. Remember Mombi? She was the witch who had imprisoned Ozma, the rightful ruler of OZ inside the body of a boy named Tip. She was also the inventor of the “Powder of Life” which when sprinkled on anything, brought it to life. Thanks to her, we have Jack Pumpkinhead and the Wooden Sawhorse!
I still have the OZ Treasury Edition comic somewhere too that DC and Marvel created together, you’re right…that was a great idea and a gem to any OZ follower back in the day.
THE MULE trailer looked like a reasonably tense thriller. Rather turned out a so so character study of a skeleton.
