Sneaky Dragon Episode 580

Hola, Sneakers! Welcome to Episode 580 of near constant calamity!

This week, Ian is not with us as this week’s original episode was somehow lost. Instead, Dave’s daughter Eve steps into the breach to talk party favours, meme translation, mumblehorror, creepy pasta, public failure, first person spectator, pride and amnesia, romantic jerks, failure to land, our Top 5 rom-coms, Questions of the Week, and, finally, passed pasts.

Question of the Week: What is some life advice you’d give someone?
Sub-question of the Week: What is your favourite fast-food burger?
Sub-sub-question of the Week: What is the one song you’d play to liven up the party?

Thanks for listening.

Dave misremembered the title of one of the films we discussed. The actual title is Adventure in Manhattan.

  1. Worry once, suffer twice. Fake it till you make it. Don’t put your compost in the crisper. Quarter Pounder BLT. I would ask someone else to choose a song.

  2. Thanks to Eve for helping out with the replacement podcast! I enjoyed the rom-com round-up. I didn’t mind the ending of Kissing Jessica Stein. The movie is about experimentation and personal growth. At the beginning of the movie, Jessica is just not ready for a lover. But she could really use a friend. Finding out you’re better off as platonic not romantic partners can happen with any couple be they straight, gay, bi, asexual or any combination. The subgenre of movies about “relationships that help you grow but ultimately end” is underrated. They probably don’t sell as many tickets or streaming subscriptions but they offer useful life advice. Others I like in this category are Chasing Amy, 500 Days of Summer, and Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I’d put Sleepless in Seattle in there too. It’s more about the yearning for connection and possibility of love after loss.

BTW, in You’ve Got Mail, Meg Ryan’s character becomes an editor for children’s books, so she goes from selling books to helping to create them. The closing of her mother’s bookstore used to bother me too. But in a big city like New York, or Vancouver for that matter, independent businesses and even big chains are going to be at the mercy of high rents and changing retail options so I’ve come around to that as a realistic plot point.

Life advice? Pay off your credit card balance each month. When I ate fast food, I went with a McChicken or a Filet-o-Fish (technically not burgers.) To liven up a party, I’d play “Conga” by the Miami Sound Machine.

    1. I also wanted to mention I’m not into Woody Allen movies, but I did really like The Purple Rose of Cairo. I loved the line, “I just met a wonderful new man. He’s fictional but you can’t have everything.”

Wow! Three hours and thirteen minutes of Dedrick magic! I think I’ve only ever heard Eve on a podcast when she was making the intro on Listening Party, what a great partner to fill in for Ian. David, not only do you have one daughter and a spouse who is professional and kills it on the air, but the entire Dedrick household! Why not do a Dedrick Family podcast? Or is that a little bit over the top with you versus the three women of the family? I’d listen and buy tickets.

Life advice? My Dad has always preached that you can learn more from your elders and the older generation, so never discount them when it comes to wisdom. As the Patriarch, he may just be looking out for his own self interests but I agree with him as I stride to do the same while I hope my youths will do the same with me.

There’s a hamburger chain down here in Texas called Whataburger, ever heard of it? Whataburger has been around since the 1950’s and if some Texans knew I was voting against it, they’d probably slash my tires…or me. They’re HUGE burgers but they all kind of taste the same to me…kind of mustardy and loaded with chopped onions if you don’t order it without but I’m going to go with any of their competitors. It depends on what I’m in the mood for, every chain has their specialty, Jack in the Box has the Ultimate Cheeseburger, McDonald’s has The Big Mac and Burger King has The Whopper, all favorites of mine. But I think my all time favorite is the one I can’t have because they’re no longer located here…The Carl’s Jr. Superstar or Big Carl Burger. I used to eat Carl’s Jr. burgers all the time, we had one around the corner and walking distance from Lone Star and they were huge, big burgers with everything fresh on them. I just went to their restaurant locator and entered my location and I got the Carl’s Jr. Star character icon crying tears with “SORRY THERE ARE NO LOCATIONS FOUND” under him. If I want Whataburger, which is easiest, they’re like Starbucks down here in Texas and can be found on every corner…just hold the mustard.

Proven song to liven up any party I approve of, “Shattered” by The Rolling Stones. It’s the song Sean and I used to listen to while we closed down Lone Star Comics for the night. I can testify to vacuuming, counting money and even dancing to it as Sean and I did on the counters more than once. Selling funny books makes you happy like that and that song rocks.

Everyone have a terrific weekend and week, look up “Shattered” and rock on Sneakers!!

You were asking about what the acceptable blood sugar levels were for a diabetic. I’m a type 2 diabetic which means my body creates insulin but not enough, so I take medication and maintain a sugar-free diet to keep my blood sugar at a constant level. For my age and weight, the levels should be between 100 and 140 depending on whether I’ve eaten or not. I check it at the same time every night and I’ve kept the levels at an average of about 125 with a few spikes into the 160 range. The real test is when I get my A1C checked every three months, the bloodwork from that is the aggregate reading that counts. It should be below a 6.0 or lower. Just to give you some reference where I started when I was diagnosed and when I let my diabetes get out of hand, my blood sugar was close to 400 and my A1C as higher than 11, so I’ve brought it down since then and I feel much better for it.

  5. Big thanks to Eve for saving the day. I can attest to the fact that Dave was very, very bummed to have lost what he said was a really good 3+ hour show. And with Ian being so busy and unavailable to re-record, that complicated things – but good ol’ Eve bravely stepped into the breach. Well done.
#1 – Life advice – I’m going to counter Ed and say consider who you let influence you – just because a person is your elder/is in a position of power/authority in your life doesn’t necessarily mean they have it all together, know all the ins and outs about things, or even have your best interests at heart. If you know what you want from life, it’s what you’re good at and brings you happiness/satisfaction/peace, then take that path.
#2. I love the White Spot Legendary burger with cheese. It’s a sentimental favourite, and even when overcooked (which is now more often than not), it hits the spot. Vera’s and Five Guys burgers are also good.
#3. I never get to pick the music at parties, so I don’t know how this would go over, but my first choice would be Song 2 by Blur which I know Dave will say bleeeeck to. And probably not politically correct anymore but Gary Glitter’s Rock and Roll Part 1 + 2 are also good.
