  1. I don’t know that I have a favourite replacement from a TV show or band or whatever, but the final guy to step in as the latest boyfriend replacement for me really worked out well oh so many years ago now.
For architecture style, I do love a well done MCM house for many reasons, economy of space often being one of the big ones (often they go too far in that department when it comes to the kitchens, sadly). Another place they sometimes don’t measure up is in the use of natural light – but I think Neutra nails that most of the time. Sometimes they get a little too boxy so I also like an MCM that has an exterior blend with its environment and when FLW got it right, he REALLY got it right, case in point: Fallingwaters. Kim Possible has a great MCM house; there’s a house in the Southlands neighbourhood of Vancouver that is very much like it that Eve and I refer to as the Kim Possible House.
However, on the other end of the spectrum I also really love the homey-ness of Cottage Style, Ranch style (ranchers), and Cape Cods. I also like the look of Craftsman style exteriors (I’m less in love with their interiors but I wouldn’t turn one down if someone offered me one lol).

Welcome back Ian, one week later but nonetheless…I’m glad you’re out of that damned hospital. I can’t help but imagine a cartoon with you laid up in the hospital with Coen by your side, him thinking, “Now Ian needs me…”

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I thought Don Cheadle did a great job as James “Rhodey” Rhodes after Terrence Howard walked away due to contract disputes. Who knows what it would have been like to see Howard play War Machine but I’ve really enjoyed Cheadle in the role. I think it makes more sense that Cheadle, who’s 5′ 8″ would fit into the War Machine suit than the 6’0″ Howard. The Iron Man suits seem to be made to fit smaller sized bodies rather than big, muscular ones…or does that seem like a rationale I’m imagining due to Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle’s heights?

I want to REVERSE the replacement question with one actress in two separate roles, the late Kirstie Alley.

I think “Star Trek The Search for Spock” is so vastly underrated in the whole “Even-numbered, Odd-numbered” thing about the Paramount Star Trek films, I thought Nimoy did a stellar job directing. Kirstie Alley, who played Saavik so wonderfully sexy as much as anyone could play a half Vulcan, half Romulan in the previous film, “Wrath of Khan”, was replaced by the deadpan Robin Curtis. I’m sure Curtis’ portrayal was probably more in the spirit of what a Vulcan/Romulan should be like, so I’ll give her credit for that. I was so sold on Alley as Saavik in “The Wrath of Khan” though, I still wince at Curtis in the following film. “Admiral, David is dead.” Ugh.

Switch over to Kirstie Alley in the sitcom “Cheers”, who replaced Shelly Long after she left the show in 1987. I know it’s not the character role, but her position in the cast, Alley’s Rebecca Howe for Long’s Diane Chambers never seemed quite equal. Long received five Emmy nominations, winning in 1983 for the role as Diane Chambers, who I think had the better chemistry with Ted Danson’s Sam Malone. Alley’s onscreen romance with Sam, Robin Robin Colcord and Evan Drake just came off as more annoying and needy than anything. I wanted Diane back. I was a “Cheers” fanatic, how about you guys? I’d give anything to see a reunion in the bar….with Diane of course.

(Note: Upon proofing the above message, I just now realized that Kirstie Alley is the second main cast member of “Cheers” to have passed on. So the “Diane of course”, as morbid as it sounds, was meant as a preference, not due to mortality…

Live Long and Prosper to all the Sneakers in the Galaxy.
I’ve got a Trekkie nerdgasm waiting as I prepare to watch the series finale of “Star Trek: Picard.”

  3. Good to hear you back behind the microphone, Ian.

I don’t know if you’ve been “replaced” if you’ve aged out of a role, but Tom Holland is my favourite Spider-Man so far. I wasn’t that fond of Andrew Garfield in the role. However, his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home was hilarious. That was a smart way to acknowledge fan sentiment. I thought Pierce Brosnan was a good choice for Bond after Moore’s cheesier turns and Dalton’s okay efforts. I wish Henry Cavill could take a shot at Bond, so to speak. He looked great in the Superman and Witcher suits. I think he’d fill out a tux nicely while dispatching villains with an appropriate lack of ruth.

I love the California Bungalows that were built in Vancouver in the 1920s. We had one in our old neighbourhood which was surrounded by a lovely garden. The overhanging roof and eaves are much better suited for our rainy climate than the later Vancouver “specials.” If I had such a house, I’d fill it with all sorts of Art Nouveau décor and stained glass.

  4. Marcus (Will) Harwell

Welcome back, Ian! I loves me some Dedrick bro banter, but the show is at its best with you and Dave together.

I’m going to pretend music was part of the question so I can say my favorite replacement is Neil Peart (obligatory: “PEERT”) as drummer and lyricist for Rush. He was the perfect catalyst for nearly 50 years of wonderful stuff. My second favorite Replacement is Paul Westerberg.

For actors, though, Tom Holland as Spider-Man. Also the M*A*S*H* replacement character guys: Mike Farrell, Harry Morgan, and David Ogden Stiers.
