  1. I spent my 20s doing odd jobs in local theatre. At the time, I felt I wasn’t doing all that much but in retrospect, it was like an apprenticeship. I learned a lot from being around talented writers and performers and made a few good contacts who brought me on board their projects. So by the time I turned 30, the biggest and most surprising personal change was that I could call myself a working writer.

When you asked what cultural trend you couldn’t get behind, what sprang to mind was the disco era. It wasn’t only me. The whole scene was parodied in its time. Then last night, I happened to watch Minions: The Rise of Gru. It’s set in 1976 with a style so retro, in the opening titles, there was a disco ball instead of an “O” in the word “minions.” I did enjoy the soundtrack and the all the pop culture references so maybe I’m more forgiving of the era now. It was the fifth highest-grossing film of 2022.
