Sneaky Dragon Listening Party Ep. 15

This week, soul brothers and soul sisters, David and Mary get down and get funky as they boogaloo to a new mixtape!

That’s right. It’s another themed mixtape as Dave was asked to put together a funk/soul/R&B mix for a listener – and he complied! (Well, as much as a natural-born contrarian like Dave can comply with anything.)

So, put on your dancin’ shoes and boogie on down to some badass tracks. Can you dig it?

  1. The Fantastic Johnny C – “Boogaloo Down Broadway” – Boogaloo Down Broadway, 1968
  2. Bush Tetras – “You Can’t Be Funky” – Rituals EP, 1981
  3. Darrell Banks – “Open the Door to Your Heart” – single “Open the Door to Your Heart” b/w “Our Love (Is in the Pocket), 1966
  4. Curtis Harding – “Keep On Shining” – Soul Power, 2014
  5. The Fatback Band – “Are You Ready (to Do the Bus Stop)?” – Raising Hell, 1975
  6. Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose – “Too Late to Turn Back Now” – Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose , 1972
  7. Diana Ross – “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” – Diana Ross, 1970
  8. Dyke and the Blazers – “We Got More Soul” – single “We Got More Soul” b/w “Shotgun Slim”, 1969
  9. Darlene Love – “Stumble and Fall” – Back to Mono (1958-1969), 1991
  10. Aaron Neville – “Hercules” – single “Hercules” b/w “Going Home”, 1973
  11. The Chi-Lites – “The Coldest Day of My Life” – A Lonely Man, 1972

In addition to the song selection on the mixtape, we also heard:

  • Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell – “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”
  • The Meters – “Cissy Strut”

Thanks for listening.

First time writing you guys here at the Listening Party Section!

Dave, you and I are the same age so much of the stories and experiences you discuss are very familiar to me. I also have a daughter who I believe is very close in age to Mary…so your podcast resonates with me very well. You two are terrific together, I love the stories. I love the music. And I love you two on this show.

I remember making mix tapes from albums and off the radio, so all this is so much fun to reminisce. These days I keep a running playlist for each year going back to 2008 for me. Each year gets a different playlist with music that helps me remember where my head was musically throughout the years. When a good friend of mine died suddenly two years ago, part of that playlist has music devoted to him. This year only has about a half dozen songs in the playlist so far but I’m adding this one, I think you’ll find it very familiar….

Best to you both, you’re my heroes….

    1. Thanks, Ed!

That song does seem strangely familiar.

Love the Marx Brothers-themed t-shirt (and other items) artwork you’ve been doing. It looks great!

I insist that you send us one of your favourite playlists so we can see (and hear) what you like to listen to!

Very kind of you to mention the designs I’ve been working on. The Marx Brothers ones have been fun and challenging since I have to omit anything resembling the Marxes or their names. Someone is always quick to call me out on whether I have the rights to sell them legally….the same goes for the Star Wars designs. So far so good though, and even though the Marx Brothers are much more esoteric than Star Wars, they’ve sold better than Star Wars…possibly because I’ve been promoting them to the Marx Brothers groups so much.

I’m flattered you’re interested in one of my playlists! I’ll have to decide on one, sounds fun! Thanks again for the podcast, you and Mary continue to delight…
