Sneaky Dragon Listening Party Ep. 24

Hello, fellow music fanatics, and welcome to Episode 24 of our little podcast in which we celebrate mixtapes and all the wonderful music that has found its way onto those precious cassettes.

This week Mary returns as host to bring you side two of her own mixtape project – designed to help pass the working hours, cleaning toilets and making beds. (A big ask for a mixtape!)

So, make yourselves comfortable in the Listening Party lounge – curl up with a nice warm blanket and bring your favourite drink. We have some nacho chips this week!

Thanks for listening.

On this episode we listened to:

  1. King Biscuit Time [aka Steve Mason] – “I Walk the Earth” – No Style EP, 2000
  2. Harvey Danger – “Flagpole Sitta” – Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone?, 1997
  3. Margaret Glaspy – “You and I” – Emotions and Math, 2016
  4. Local Rabbits – “Nightingale” – Basic Concept, 1998
  5. The Go! Team – “Huddle Formation” – Thunder, Lightning, Strike, 2004

  1. I’ve only listened to one song so far and I LOVE IT!!! I haven’t heard King Biscuit Time for so long – I forgot how great they were. Thanks so much.

  2. Thanks for the work/playlist, Mary. I picture you in the BC wilderness like an alt-rock Snow White, whistling — well, singing — while you worked, only without the help of furry woodland creatures. I was inspired to clean my own toilet while listening to the last two Sneaky Dragon Listening Parties. It helped!

For me, “Big Yellow Taxi” ties with “Both Sides Now” for best-known/fav Joni Mitchell song. I remember my sister listening to Amy Grant’s cover of BYT, and noticing she’d changed the price of entry to the tree museum from “a dollar and a half” to “twenty-five bucks just to see them.” I always wondered if that was over-inflated, so today I went to my favourite historical money comparison website measuringworth.com to find out what $1.50 in 1970 would be worth in 1995. Answer: $5.89. So apparently the museum REALLY jacked up the price, the greedy bastards!

Also about Joni Mitchell, I remember asking a music manager once how he would help a client over stage fright and he mentioned that Joni, whom he worked with, had really bad nerves when performing. It was surprising/reassuring to me that someone so talented had the same anxieties about singing in front of a crowd as I have!

    1. Thanks, Louise! Glad to hear that Listening Party has an actual use! Also, what a great pull quote. I can’t wait for the opportunity to use it!

It’s quite amazing how many performers – great performers – suffer from stage fright. I wonder of there are more female performers who suffer form it than men? I think there are more demands placed on women performers than their male counterparts – particularly being judged on appearance.

I have to say that I also used to suffer terribly from anxiety when i used to perform on stage. Doing the podcast has definitely helped with that!

  3. Another great episode, folks. Mary’s ‘corniest joke’ line was a perfect, laugh out loud, daughter-dad moment.

I enjoyed the Go! Team in particular, and it was great to hear the La’s again. That album was a favourite when my wife and I were first going out together nearly 30 years ago, so it’s imbued with happy memories. Even though I know ‘la’ is Scouse for ‘lad’, I can’t believe I never made that connection before – d’oh!

Other standout tracks included the Monochrome Set and Sloan. Margaret Glaspy was pretty good too, but my inner grammar cop was crying out, ‘It’s you and ME, Margaret!’. I mean, really…

Corb Lund was great fun. Sure, the tune was highly derivative in all its dingle dongle dangliness, but I found the playing and lyrics captivating.

    Support your local rabbits!

You guys did so well with Mary’s mixtape that I had to immediately purchase “Flagpole Sitta” and “You and I” upon finishing the podcast. I’ve already added them both to my own ever expanding 2019 MIX. GREAT mixtape Mary, you’ve proven that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to your expertise and passion for music. I’m blessed by you both, I love listening to this podcast.

You mentioned that you created this mixtape so you’d have something to pass the time while you cleaned. The irony here is that I listen to all the Sneaky Dragon podcasts (mostly this one) while I clean my house, which passes the time quite well. So again, Thanks guys for helping me clean my house!!
