Sneaky Dragon Listening Party – Ep. 45

Hello, partygoers! Come ride out the side effects of quarantine-itis in our ever-welcoming rumpus room. We’ve got the old Victrola spinning some discs and there is always a comfy seat for you.

This week we continue with Dave’s favourite musical game: “Top 5 Songs” lists for one more week before we put our noses back to the grindstone.

Dave has the songs, Mary has her opinions, and you gotta love it!

Thanks for listening.

  1. 1981, and TEAC 4-track, but otherwise factual about “Ghost Paper Boy In Robin’s Gay Trailer Park”. And the drums were recorded at John Dekker and Glen Forrieter’s little house in Surrey, not in my parents’ basement. But why am I being a dweeb about this? Great listening party!

  2. Hi Dave and Mary, I couldn’t decide which list to send so I’m posting both. My exposure to music has been limited so any more unusual and obscure songs suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    1) Louise’s Top 5 Dancing Songs that Mention Moonlight

    Van Morrison – “Moondance” – 1970
King Harvest – “Dancing in the Moonlight” – 1970
Sixpence None the Richer – “Kiss Me” – 1997
    Neil Young – “Harvest Moon” – 1992
    The Kinks – “Come Dancing” – 1983

    Bonus song:
Loreena McKennitt – “All Soul’s Night” – 1992. Technically she doesn’t mention moonlight, but then again she doesn’t say there’s NOT a moon…

    2) 9-year-old Louise’s Top 5 Partridge Family Songs
(good for playing while removing the bubble gum from your waist-length hair)

Point Me in the Direction of Albuquerque – 1970
Somebody Wants to Love You -1970
    Rainmaker – 1971
    I Think I Love You – 1970
    Only a Moment Ago – 1970

  3. Chris Roberts

Really enjoying these top 5 shows.

Faves this biweek included Michael Hurley, Nilsson, No Fun, The La’s, The Turtles and Eleanor Rigby. The Turtles track sent me off in search of the Battle of the Bands album, which I agree is fantastic, so thank you for that one in particular. By the way, that was me shouting ‘Merton Parkas!!’ when you were recalling mod revival acts.

Nobody asked for a bonus mountains track, but here you go anyway:

Walking with a mountain / Rock n roll queen – Ian Hunter, Welcome to the club, 1980.
No idea what the hell he’s on about, but I love this old Mott the Hoople song, especially in Hunter’s live version, with great guitar work from Mick Ronson.

And here’s another top 5 list – this time it’s science songs:

NaCl – Kate and Anna McGarrigle – Pronto Monto, 1976
The bonding of the elements that make up salt, told in the form of a boy meets girl romance. Delightful.

E=mc2, – Big Audio Dynamite – This is Big Audio Dynamite, 1985
Not entirely about Einstein, but it’s the groove that moves, baby!

Mammal – They Might Be Giants – Apollo 18, 1992
Funny, clever, and the only lyric I know that uses the words ‘monotreme’, ‘allotheria’ and ‘echidna’.

Werner Von Braun, Tom Lehrer – That Was the Year That Was, 1965
Okay, The Elements would have been the more obvious choice, but I relish the satirical savagery on display here.

(Jesus hits like the) Atom Bomb – Atom Bomb, 2005
Who says science and religion can’t mix?

Bonus track: Supercollider – Fountains of Wayne – Welcome Interstate Managers, 2003
Stretching the science category waaay past breaking point here, as this is really about smoking weed in the desert. But it does use the word ‘supercollider’ and is just such a great song…
