Sneaky Dragon Listening Party Ep. 6

Hello, music lovers! A little bit of a change this week as Mary was away on recording day so-o-o-o-o…Dave’s younger daughter Eve steps in for Mary!

So please join Dave and Eve in the Listening Lounge. Bring a blanket and your favourite cuppa, then curl up in a comfy chair as we listen to Side 2 of Nick Pond’s second mixtape

  1. The Luv’d Ones – “Up Down Sue” – single b/w “Yeah, I’m Feeling Fine”, 1966
  2. Paul Stookey – “The Wedding Song (There Is Love)” – Paul and…, 1971
  3. Lavender Diamond – “Oh No” – Imagine Our Love, 2007
  4. The Merry-Go-Round – “Live” – The Merry-Go-Round, 1967
  5. Belle and Sebastian – “Wrapped Up in Books” – Dear Catastrophe Waitress, 2006
  6. Local Rabbits – “(Sally Ann’s) Style Denial” – You Can’t Touch This, 1995
  7. Spoon – “My Mathematical Mind” – Gimme Fiction, 2005
  8. Nick Drake – “Place to Be” – Pink Moon, 1972
  9. Terry Manning – “Rocks” – Thank You Friends – The Ardent Records Story, 2008
  10. Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks – “Elmo Delmo” – Real Emotional Trash, 2008

(Please note: Eve was feeling shy this episode and we had a heck of a time keeping her on mike. Our apologies for the occasional quiet mumble!)

Update!

Here is a link to a zip file of Nick Pond’s second mixtape. Dave was lazy and has put the songs together in two bunches – side one and side two – rather than individually so you can’t skip tracks. Sorry! This also includes the artwork if you want to make your own CD.

If you need any help figuring out how to use compressed files, please write us at sneakyd@sneakydragon.com for a quick tutorial.

  1. Fantastic show from Dave and Eve, with a great selection of songs. Probably my favourite list so far. Well done to Eve for stepping into the breach and being an excellent co-host.

I had never thought about how the term ‘album’ came to be used for records. My inner geek thanks you for that bit of trivia.

Luv’d Ones hooked me straight away with the drumming.

Didn’t care at all for Paul Stookey. Then I listened a second time and found it perfectly charming. Ah, music…

Loved Lavender Diamond, naturally. Not taking your bait on that one, Dedrick… 🙂

Merry-Go-Round had a lot of Buffalo Springfield to my ears. But then, the Springfield had a really strong Beatles influence too, especially the first album.

Belle and Sebastian, oh dear. I really want to like them, and this was okay. But the melody of the chorus borrows heavily from In the Country, by Cliff Richard and the Shadows. Probably one of these unconscious things that can happen to songwriters now and then, but it really distracted me.

If you don’t know In the Country, here’s an ‘interesting’ video:

Stick it to the man, Sir Cliff!

Absolutely loved Local Rabbits. They must have been something live. It’s a shame this album is so hard to find – I’ve had to resort to YouTube.

Spoon – another winner. What a groove.

Lovely to hear Nick Drake again. Pink Moon is such a sad album, and I hadn’t listened in a while. His playing and singing are so good, but there’s an unfinished quality to many of the songs. It’s not just the stripped back production, which I love. You sense he was starting to feel blocked as a writer, that he could only take some of the songs so far before running out of steam. Great idea to play the Unthanks after.

‘Goofy fun’ pretty much summed up Terry Manning. A nice palate cleanser before the closer from Stephen Malkmus, which I also enjoyed.

  2. Good job, Eve, for the last minute substitute hosting. I keep wishing that this become a weekly podcast but then it takes me so long to get through it that maybe two weeks it just the right number, LOL. Here’s my opinion (for what it’s worth): first of all, loved The Luv’d Ones – that was new one to me, and kind of a sad story, but glad she finally got some recognition; second, you can keep your Paul Stookey; Lavender Diamond was another new one that I enjoyed; The Merry-Go-Round was not new to me, and I’m so-so on it; then we were in for a great run, as I love the Belle and Sebastian piece; Local Rabbits is my fave on this segment, closely followed by ‘My Mathematical Mind’ – I think this is Spoon’s best song – so great! And Nick Drake, another lovely but sad story. It was nice hearing his mom’s song, too – thanks. Terry Manning, not really up my alley. I like Pavement, and I like some Stephen Malkmus and the Jiks songs, but I stand with Mary on this one: Elmo Delmo is one of my least favourites. I would love to see Belle and Sebastian live, they still come through town every so often.

  3. Loved the Luv’d Ones track. Prompted me to revisit my “One Kiss Leads to Another” set for the first time in ages.
Thumbs up on the Belle & Sebastian track. I’ve bought several of their albums in recent months and credit Sneaky Dragon for the inspiration. David played “Stars of Track & Field” on an episode somewhere back there, which caught my attention. Knew of but paid no real attention to them before that.
Thumbs down on Stookey. Heard that song often in the 70s. It hasn’t improved with age. One bad apple don’t spoil the whole show though. Good stuff as always.
