Hello, film fans, and welcome to the pilot episode of The Fansplainers Film Cast. Of course, since it is our pilot episode, it only makes sense for us to talk about Captain Marvel or, as she’s also known, jet fighter pilot (geddit?) Carol Danvers!
Although Ian and David enjoyed Captain Marvel, they did have some issues with some of the characterization and plotting. But they don’t just criticize! What’s the fun in that? No, they also offer some solutions for some of the film’s problems. (Something we’re sure the directors have been waiting for!)

Thank you for that! I didn’t even remember seeing this one, but the more you talked, the more I thought, hey… wait a minute… Now I understand it (even though I still don’t really remember seeing it, LOL – but obviously I did).
Well, there was a lot of space stuff. You always have problems with movies set in outer space for some reason!
Love the new show. I came away from Captain Marvel feeling happy but also “meh”. i couldn’t quite figure out what bugged me about it. This helped!

What a good show, Ian and David! What am I saying? I enjoy ALL of your “side-casts”! Haven’t had a chance to see Captain Marvel, and now probably won’t, but like your analysis and look forward, already, to the next. Thanks guys!
Laurel, thanks as always. You mentioned a while back that you’ve been seeing movies with your grandkids. I don’t know how old they are, but at the screening Ian and I attended, there were some kids who were really, really enjoying the movie. A lot!

Ian, I said the same thing to my sister after we saw the movie – that it was okay but it felt more like television, like an extended Agents of Shield episode. My best guess as to why the screenwriters chose to start the story where they did is that they wanted the audience to experience what Carol was going through – being in the dark about her past then discovering that neither she nor the cause she’s fighting for are what they really are. Which is a valid approach for a cautionary tale about being on the wrong side of history. But I agree with Dave that since most people are going to know from the trailer that she used to be a jet pilot on Earth, that part wasn’t much of a twist. Maybe they should’ve brought Sophocles in to do a pass on the script…he seemed to be able to pull off that “in media res” thing in Oedipus Rex.
Did he write the Oedipus Rex-Men?
