Ian and David, thank you, thank you, thank you for this show! I have just finished listening to this episode, Spiderman into the Spiderverse. I saw the movie when it came out, and loved it, but realize now that I missed a LOT of detail. You explained it all so well! Now I will have to watch it a second time…and maybe a third!
Just saw Shazam! last week with grandson. Can’t wait to hear your long-form take on that one (having heard you share SOME of your thoughts on it on Sneaky Dragon already!)

Those live action superhero movies are storyboarded and computer-previsualized too, but I think the Spiderverse team did a particularly stellar job of planning and executing their vision. It was a beautiful movie in every way.
Whereas with Shazaam, it felt like they were borrowing the hearts from Marvel’s deck of cards but just had to go and shuffle their dark deck of DC cards into it.
I am loving this new series! I rewatched this film recently with my purchase of a blu-ray copy and it is thoroughly enjoyable every time. The scene with the dad talking to him through the doorway gets me tearing up every time.
One of the elements of the film that I found most strongly compelling personally were his struggles with the expectations placed on him. As a new adult coming into the world and full time student about to graduate, there are a lot of pressures around having a path built for you and facing an uncertain future. You picked up on these themes in the direction of not fitting in, which is definitely a strong pull throughout (as you mention, not fitting in at school, not fitting in with the spider gang), but I wonder what your thoughts were on more of the societal rather than interpersonal pressures he struggles with?
Again, I love this spinoff and am super excited for some upcoming ones! Have you thought of possibly doing the film Us that was released recently?
Dammit, you guys. I ran out of podcasts to listen to, so I went back and listened to this. I’d been saving most of the Fansplainers until I saw the movies, but I figured I wasn’t very likely to see this one (not a big Spiderman fan, kinda meh/hit-or-miss on animated stuff). Well, it sounds great and now I need to see it. But of course I’m also completely spoiled on it, which is entirely my fault (I could have stopped listening when it started sounding interesting, which was pretty early on). Anyway, just thought I’d share. Dammit!!
Also, this is a great sidecast and I need to get in gear on seeing more of these movies so I can listen to the episodes.
