Sneaky Dragon Listening Party – Ep. 27

Welcome, partygoers! We’re so glad you’ve joined Dave and Mary as they sit around the old gramophone and spin some discs. As always, there’s lots of room in the Listening Party Rumpus Room so pull up a comfy chair and settle down to hear this week’s selection of great tunes!

On this episode, things get a little quieter after the noisy, punkish mid-90s Canadiana of the last two episodes. For Dylan O’Connell’s second mixtape, Dave seems to have unconsciously chosen a more sedate group of songs to counteract his selection of songs on Dylan’s first mixtape.

We hope you’ll enjoy Dave’s choice of songs:

  1. Super Furry Animals – “Tradewinds” – Rings Around the World, 2001
  2. The Shins – “Kissing the Lipless” – Chutes Too Narrow, 2003
  3. Drive By Truckers – “Danko, Manuel” – The Dirty South, 2004
  4. Prefab Sprout – “Bonny” – Steve McQueen, 1986
  5. Sharon Van Etten – “Nothing Will Change” – Are We There, 2014
  6. Rita Lee and Tutti Frutti – “O Toque” – Fruito Proibido, 1975
  7. Death Vessel – “Bruno’s Torso” – Nothing Is Precious Enough for Us, 2008
  8. Air – “Run” – Talkie Walkie, 2003
  9. Richard Hell and the Voidoids – “Walking on the Water” – Blank Generation, 1977
  10. Low – “Silver Rider” – The Great Destroyer, 2005

Also played on this bi-week’s episode:

  • Creedence Clearwater Revival – “Walk on the Water” – Creedence Clearwater Revival , 1968 (The cover of this song by 1970s art punkers Richard Hell and the Voidoids uses the original title of the song when CCR recorded it in 1966 under their previous name The Golliwogs. This single – credited to John and Tom Fogerty under the nom de tunes Toby Green and Rann Wilde – uses a slightly different arrangement and doesn’t feature the longer instrumental work out of the later album cut. a curiously deep cut of a choice by a supposedly scorched earth-everything sucks before 1970-something or other punk act.)

Here is the original version of The Golliwogs “Walking on the Water”:

  1. I really liked the laidback vibe of this mixtape. I’m looking forward to Side 2.

Your mention of Thomas Dolby producing for Prefab Sprout reminded me that I kind of, sort of once wrote a song with him! He was a guest on Big Sound, a Canadian sitcom about the music industry. In the episode, he is being pitched on hosting a kids’ science show. I came up with the lyrics for a children’s song that the receptionist character, Jessie writes when her twin sister Eve shows up to steal her job. The actress sang the song with Mr. Dolby accompanying her on an electronic keyboard. I never spoke with him when he was on set so I don’t know who came up with the melody – him or the actress – but he played some chords to my lyrics so I’m gonna call that a collaboration!

    The DNA Song

    Verse:
    When your Daddy’s sperm
    Meets your Mummy’s egg
It makes a brand new cell.
    Their chromosomes combine
    Isn’t that fine!
And you turn out quite well.
    But deoxyribonucleic acid
    Sometimes turns out wrong.
Whoops! Bad genes made your sister evil.
    Everyone sing the DNA Song!

    Chorus:
    DNA! DNA!
That’s why I turned out this way.
You need help but I’m okay
    Thanks to DNA!

Note to Mary: not all sisters who are named Eve are evil!

  2. Hiya folks! I’ve been falling behind in commenting, but not in listening. Still loving this podcast.

Highlights for me in episode 27 included…

Super Furry Animals – never really checked them out, but liked this song a lot.

Drive By Truckers – didn’t really grab me at first, but the good ol’ second listen test revealed a wonderful depth and beauty. Probably my favourite song this biweek.

Low – slow burn, indeed, and a fine closer. Part Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings and part Gene Clark (of Dillard and Clark fame).

Can’t say any version of Walking on the Water really grabbed me. I probably liked Creedence best, though my teen self will always be true to the Voidoids.

Speaking of Danko and Manuel, here’s a touching video of Garth Hudson’s return to Big Pink five years ago:
